“at this very moment, as we sit here, women around the world are giving birth, raising children, cooking meals, washing clothes, planting crops, working on assembly lines, running companies, and running countries.” —hillary rodham clinton

Marriage is not
a house or even a tent

it is before that, and colder:

The edge of the forest, the edge
of the desert
the unpainted stairs
at the back where we squat
outside, eating popcorn

where painfully and with wonder
at having survived even
this far

we are learning to make fire

the forest for the trees.

i’m thinking that people place way too much emphasis on identifying their fashion icons; individual people whose “look” we admire and wish to replicate or emulate. instead i try to seek a more general inspiration for my style- yes there are certain celebrities who i think successfully cultivate and define a certain aesthetic that i love; pharell williams, alexa chung, nicole richie, charlotte free, kurt cobain, rumi neely, and betsey johnson, to name a few, but i’m also just really inspired by everyday people on streetstyle blogs, and by japanese subcultures like mori girls, yama girls, cosplay, and of course, the harajuku district. basically i admire anyone who takes fashion risks while maintaining their integrity and sense-of-self. t generally look to smart, educated, strong, and liberated women for inspiration not so much aesthetically, but more for the overall way they carry themselves and lead their lives; people like gloria steinem and hillary rodham clinton. i know they’re not necessarily considered the most fashionable people, but their timeless style has more to do with confidence, character, and defying expectation than it does with the clothes they choose to wear. style and substance really don’t have to be mutually exclusive at all.

homage to my hips- lucille clifton

these hips are big hips.
they need space to
move around in.
they don’t fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don’t like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top.

“for women…. bras, panties, bathing suits, and other stereotypical gear are visual reminders of a commercial and idealized feminine image that our real and diverse female bodies can’t possibly fit. without these visual references each woman’s body demands to be accepted on its own terms. we stop being comparatives. we begin to be unique.” —gloria steinem
